Daring Greatly

Where do I even begin with this one! This book was life changing for me as it created a complete mindset shift and was an integral step as I sought to transition from a ‘results-based’ leader to an ‘inspiring and persuasive’ leader. It taught me that not only is it ok to lean into vulnerability as a leader, but rather it’s a pre-requisite if you want you and your team to achieve greatness.

This book brought Theodore Roosevelt’s ‘Man in the Arena’ speech to life and the teachings from that speech have been an anchor for me over the last several years as I began taking more risks, putting myself out there and leaning into discomfort.  Ultimately, Brene states that when we step back and examine our lives, we will find that nothing is as uncomfortable, dangerous, or hurtful as standing on the outside looking in and wondering what it would be like if we had the courage to step into the arena.

I’ll also share this 3-minute YouTube video of one of Brene’s Ted Talks on this subject.  During a time of extreme stress ... where I was tasked with creating a large, national internal-consulting team from nothing, while managing the built-up demands for my team’s services AND figuring out how to lead a team in a geographically dispersed environment … this 3-minute video was the first thing I watched when I woke up almost every morning for months.  This helped me normalize what I was doing and helped me reframe my perspective so that I understood, fully, what it meant to be in ‘the arena’.  This short video is a must have for anyone looking to embrace challenge, to take risk and do anything meaningful!
